Abstract

The article is dedicated to the development of recommendations for the organization and tactics of using 3D scanning during a crime scene investigation. The study analyzes the advantages of 3D scanning, such as: high accuracy, fast information capture, limited use of human resources, ensuring the safety of participants by minimizing the time for documentation in areas with potential repeated artillery shelling, and the ability to create virtual models that provide a deeper analysis of the situation.

An algorithm for the use of the scanner during the preparatory, operational, and final stages of a crime scene investigation has been developed. Emphasis is placed on the key aspects of each stage that allow for the most effective application of 3D scanning technology for documenting the situation at the crime scene, particularly when documenting war crimes. The features of scan planning, the selection of optimal points, and the consideration of lighting and other factors that affect the quality of the obtained data are discussed. The process of data collection using a 3D scanner is described, including the setup of equipment, scanning objects and spaces, and verifying the completeness of the collected information.

Effective organization and tactics of using 3D scanners during crime scene investigations and other investigative (search) actions will form the foundation for effective documentation of criminal offenses and improving the quality of investigations.

It has been established that despite the significant advantages, there are several challenges in using 3D scanners, such as the need for government funding to acquire more 3D technologies for broader implementation by law enforcement agencies, the need for specialized training, legal and ethical aspects, as well as integration with other technologies. The successful implementation of 3D scanning into the activities of law enforcement agencies for documenting various types of criminal offenses requires a comprehensive approach: the development of clear recommendations, algorithms, protocols, staff training, and the provision of appropriate conditions for data collection and processing.
