Abstract

The issue of political legitimacy in authoritarian regimes remains one of the central topics in contemporary political science, as such systems cannot rely on classical democratic mechanisms of legitimation yet must still ensure public acceptance of their rule. This article provides a comprehensive analysis of key theoretical approaches to legitimacy in the context of authoritarianism, examines the primary mechanisms for maintaining it, and identifies factors that may contribute to its weakening or complete erosion.

It is demonstrated that modern authoritarian regimes employ three main strategies of legitimation: effective governance, ideological control, and procedural legitimacy. The first strategy involves demonstrating economic stability and social welfare, fostering a sense of dependence on the state as the guarantor of order and well-being. The second is based on manipulating historical and nationalist narratives, constructing the image of an external enemy, and controlling the information space. The third entails the imitation of democratic procedures—elections, constitutional reforms, and public consultations—aimed at creating the appearance of popular support.

However, the effectiveness of these strategies has its limits. Economic stagnation, rising social discontent, and the weakening of information control create conditions for the delegitimization of the regime. Internal contradictions within ruling elites also play a significant role, potentially leading to political crises, fragmentation of power, or transitional periods. In the era of globalization and digital technology, the ability of authoritarian regimes to control social processes is significantly challenged, opening prospects for democratization or, at the very least, compelling them to undergo transformation.

The article concludes that no authoritarian regime is entirely stable, as its legitimacy remains a dynamic phenomenon, contingent on its ability to adapt to social, economic, and informational challenges. The analysis of authoritarian legitimacy is crucial not only from a theoretical perspective but also in terms of forecasting political changes in the modern world.
