Decolonization of Ukraine’s Sacred Space as a Mechanism for Dismantling Russian Imperial Narratives

Abstract

The article presents a comprehensive study of the decolonization of Ukraine’s sacred space as a mechanism for dismantling Russian imperial narratives in the context of contemporary socio-political transformations and the Russian-Ukrainian war. The theoretical foundations of understanding sacred space as a special sphere of symbolic construction of collective memory, national identity, and historical legitimation of political power are examined.

       The main mechanisms of the formation and reproduction of Russian imperial narratives within Ukraine’s cultural and sacred space are analyzed. The study demonstrates the role of historical policy, memorial practices, toponymic systems, monumental symbolism, and religious institutions in legitimizing imperial domination and promoting the concept of the “Russian World” (Russkiy Mir).

       The specific features of the contemporary policy of decolonizing Ukraine’s sacred space since 2014 and its transformation under the conditions of full-scale Russian aggression are identified. It is revealed that decolonization processes encompass not only the removal of imperial symbols but also the formation of a new system of historical meanings aimed at restoring national memory, affirming Ukrainian cultural traditions, and strengthening civic identity.

       The relationship between the decolonization of sacred space, symbolic sovereignty, and the cultural security of the state is substantiated. It is argued that cleansing the public and sacred space of imperial narratives enhances the resilience of Ukrainian society to external informational and ideological influences, contributes to national unity, and creates the conditions necessary for establishing an independent policy of historical memory.

       The study concludes that the decolonization of sacred space constitutes an important factor in consolidating the Ukrainian political nation, restoring historical justice, and strengthening the symbolic foundations of statehood amid ongoing resistance to Russia’s neo-imperial policy.
